"Fair Trade has allowed for the improvement of the quality of life in our households, these last years have improved our incomes and the majority of the producers of our organization have bought a little additional piece of land. Fair Trade has also fostered the more active participation of women in the organization and the community. Now with our own brand ‘Café Femenino’ we are able to decide how our incomes will to be spent and also we are able to decide to send our children to school, where as before only our husbands decided what to do, how to do it, and which of our children had to go to school. We now feel that we have more respect at home and in our organization. Now they listen to our opinions and take them into account."
--- Sabina Hernández, Producer from La Florida/Cajamarca Central de Cafetaleros del Nor Oriente (CECANOR), is a cooperative of coffee farmers from the Lambayeque region of Peru. Established in 1999 as a partnership between three regional cooperatives, and Fair Trade certified by Fairtrade Labelling Organizations International (FLO) that same year, CECANOR strives to receive a higher profit margin through direct sales to international markets.
Since its inception, the cooperative has been committed to quality production, environmental preservation, and community development. Twenty percent of CECANOR’s members are women, and a woman represents the cooperative on Peru’s National Coffee Board. The Fair Trade price has enabled Central de Servicios Cafetaleros del Nor Oriente to establish various social and productive programs
Education. With the assistance of Fundación Americana de Café Femenino and Fair Trade revenues, CECANOR has donated supplies to local schools. Productive Investment. CECANOR employs two agronomists that implement technical assistance programs specific to each farm’s ecosystem and microclimate. The cooperative also offers training programs in crop diversification and animal husbandry to female members, with assistance from Fundación Americana de Café Femenino. The cooperative purchased new computers and furniture for their office with Fair Trade funds. Environment. The cooperative has used Fair Trade revenues to assist with organic and shade-grown certification. Credit Program. CECANOR supports its members with access to credit at all times of the year. Health. The cooperative supports healthcare professionals trained in primary care and provides first aid kits for each of its 43 communities. Transportation Improvements. The cooperative has financed the repair of 75 kilometers of highway and the construction of over 12 kilometers of new highway. An improved road network has enabled CECANOR members to transport their coffee more efficiently. Womens Programs. In addition to their productive training programs, the cooperative founded four community banks that provide micro-credit to women for projects such as small restaurant development, parcel improvement, and sales to local markets. |
