Also... meet photographer Lindsay Kohn, New Frontiers Artist of the Month, as she shares her global traveling experiences and the stories behind the images in the photography exhibit, "Faces of India," in the deli seating area. All proceeds from Kohn's work will benefit a local village, Kuzupilly, in India. Held every Thursday night, Farmers' Market is a street fair and produce market. No dogs allowed, City Ordinance. Locals and visitors alike can shop for the county's freshest produce and flowers, devour delicious ribs and sandwiches, browse local shops open late, and enjoy assortments of live entertainment. Recognized as a leader of such activities in California, Farmers' Market is held on six downtown blocks of Higuera Street, between Osos and Nipomo streets. The area is closed to all through traffic to make room for this fabulous event. City Ordinance prohibits dogs from attending. Please leave your four legged friends at home. Look out for a six-foot bear — that's mascot "Downtown Brown" giving out hugs and paw shakes to Market-goers.

The event will be set up in the Fellowship Hall of Trinity Episcopal Church, Sutter Creek. The tables will be staffed both before and after the services. There will be examples of fair trade products from Equal Exchange, Global Exchange, Pura Vida (Bishop's Blend Coffee), Pachamama and local retailers. Products will not be sold at the fair. However, an effort is being made to coordinate group purchasing from Equal Exchange. We currently have hand-out literature from TransFair and Equal Exchange. We will also be running the video, Fair Trade : The Story, on a projector at the tables.

Come explore the Fair Trade movement through the lens of coffee, which is the most traded commodity in the world after oil!

Millions of sophisticated coffee drinkers relish a good cup of coffee. But for every $3 cup of coffee, a coffee farmer typically receives only 3 cents. Most of the money goes to the four giant conglomerates, which control the coffee market.

Black Gold focuses on Ethiopia the birthplace of coffee and follows Tadesse Meskela, General Manager of the Oromia Coffee Farmers Cooperative Union as he travels around the world trying to secure a living wage for the 70,000 coffee farmers he represents through Fair Trade. Tracing the tangled trail from the 2 billion cups of coffee consumed each day back to the coffee farmers who produce the beans, Black Gold exposes how international commodities markets are rigged against the nations of the global south

Students for Fair Trade are hosting an Ethical Food Panel to discuss the benefits of buying fair trade and locally-produced goods. Speaking on the panel will be the coordinator of a local farmer's market, the owner of a local fair trade coffee shop, representatives from the school dining services, and students working on a fair trade chocolate initiative in Ecuador. Party with the UNM students for Fair Trade.  Speakers include mayor, Mayor Martin Chavez, Jim Neustel from our local fair trade store, Peacecraft, and Larry Garcia from the director of Just Cashews. 

We are also having four local bands: Saving Damsels, Halfstache, Scarless, and Black child red. We are also going to have free food and NM Coffee Roasters are going to be there roasting coffee and giving away prizes.

The New York City Fair Trade Coalition joins Think Coffee to welcome Juanita Baltadano, president of the APPTA cocoa and fruit cooperative to New York City.  The Coalition will be hosting an ice-cream social featuring Fair Trade banana splits.  Ms. Baltadano will be discussing her experience with Fair Trade and a representative from the Coalition will discuss what can be done to support Fair Trade in New York City.

Join us in New York for a weekend of skill building and networking with other regional Fair Trade activists and movement leaders to ensure that the 2007-2008 school year is our strongest one yet! You'll meet and network with other student leaders throughout the region, learn more about fair trade, and gain organizing skills that are applicable for any leadership position throughout your life.

International Service Learning Fair Trade Craft Sale

Every year, 6 students from International Service Learning go to Kenya and help set up and run partner businesses to provide a stable source of income for poor Kenyans.  We then purchase and sell the products they make on campus.
