US
debut for Peruvian coffee growers
PANGOA cooperative, based in Peru, has been on the
Fair Trade coffee register for a few years but had
yet to make a Fair Trade sale to the US Market.
At the SCAA show in April, PANGOA piqued the interest
of specialty industry roaster, Dean |
|
Cycon,
and importer, Royal Coffee, with the co-op's professionalism
and effective community development programs. After
cupping PANGOA's samples, Dean's Beans and Royal
Coffee have decided to import a container. Dean
visits PANGOA this October to meet the co-op's members
and to celebrate their initiation into the US Fair
Trade market.
PANGOA's coffee is described as soft and sweet.
It roasts evenly and easily, and blends well without
losing its own profile. For a sample, feel free
to contact Royal
Coffee. |

FLO-Cert to become an independent certification body
The certification unit at the Fair Trade Labelling Organization
will soon become an independent organization called FLO-Cert.
This independence will enable FLO-Cert to be more responsive
to the needs of TransFair USA and our industry partners.
We expect the coordination of producer inspections to
become much more efficient, giving the Fair Trade model
the agility that our business environment requires. Watch
for the latest updates : www.fairtrade.net |

Retailers
tell the press
Fair Trade coverage reached new heights this past month
in Newsweek and the San Francisco Chronicle. In an interview
with Reuters, Karen Gordon of the Coffee Holding Company
noted, “Three years ago we carried one Fair Trade
coffee and now we carry 6 lines and are doing 2 to 3 times
the level of business 3 years ago," said Karen Gordon
the director of specialty green coffee for Coffee Holding
Company in Brooklyn. To read more, see our
