Fair Trade Guatemalan Wins Coffee Review Supermarket Cupping
In a June 2003 Coffee Review article entitled "Pursuing Quality at the Supermarket," coffee quality guru Ken Davids reports on a blind cupping of coffees pulled from the shelves of supermarkets in New York City. The winner? Bucks County Coffee's Fair Trade Certified Organic Guatemalan, which scored an impressive 94. "This extraordinary coffee should seduce just about everyone," Davids writes in his review. The coffee, produced by the Asobagri farmers cooperative in Huehuetenango, is one of four Fair Trade Certified coffees

Newman's Own Fair Trade in Harris Teeter
Harris Teeter Supermarkets announced this month that it will place a selection of Newman’s own Fair Trade Certified organic coffees in all 143 of its stores throughout the southeast. Andrea Brewer, Category Manager for Harris Teeter, said in a press release, "We know that our customers will appreciate the high quality of these coffees in the cup, and will feel great knowing the difference they are making in the quality of life for the coffee-farming families who grow these flavorful beans." Newman’s Own coffees are roasted by Green Mountain Coffee Roasters.

Fair Trade in a Bottle
This month Honest Tea becomes the first US company to offer a bottled, ready-to-drink Fair Trade Certified product as it launches its new Peach Oo-la-long. Honest Tea founder and TeaEO Seth Goldman says “Fair Trade is an important step toward improving working conditions for tea growers.” The Fair Trade premium from sales of this product will be administered by the workers’ association at Makaibari, the renowned Darjeeling garden where the tea is grown.

Check out this month's issue of Self magazine, p.98, showcasing Fair Trade Certified Divine chocolate!

Over 200 specialty foods retailers visited the TransFair USA booth at the International Fancy Food and Confections show in New York and tasted award-winning chocolates from Divine, Cocoa Camino, Ithaca Fine Chocolates, and Dagoba. Several leaders in the gourmet foods industry who visited the TransFair booth commented on the need to pay farmers fair prices in order to maintain quality. They also commended TransFair's coffee, tea, and chocolate licensees for the valuable role they play in ensuring a sustainable supply of delicious foods. Fair Trade's debut at LOHAS 7th Annual Conference
Interest in Fair Trade Certified products was high at this year's LOHAS (Lifestyles of Health and Sustainability) 7th Annual Market Trends Conference and Trade Fair, held in Colorado from June 18-19. The LOHAS market is estimated to represent a $230 billion marketplace for goods and services that appeal to consumers who value health, the environment, social justice, personal development and sustainable living. As Fair Trade continues to gain wider support in the mainstream, the Fair Trade model was given the spotlight when TransFair's own Paul Rice spoke on a panel with industry visionaries such as Perry Odak (Wild Oats) and Bob Stiller (Green Mountain Coffee Roasters).
