TransFair Milestone
- Fair Trade Week at Andronico's Markets
"Fair Trade Week" (October 6-12) at Andronico's
11 San Francisco Bay Area specialty grocery stores
marked the first TransFair - retail coffee, tea
and chocolate grocery promotion. Seven TransFair-licensed
companies participated by featuring their products
in the consumer flyer, putting their products
on promotion, and arranging product demos. Blaine
Landberg, Northern California sales representative
of Honest Tea, commented: "TransFair's Andronico's
promotion helped catapult our Fair Trade Certified™
Peach-Oo-La-Long to the forefront of all our flavor
profiles on the West Coast."

Caffe
Ladro Wins "Best of Seattle"
Caffe Ladro, one of the only multi-unit coffee
retailers in the US serving exclusively Fair Trade
Certified coffees, tied for first place in the
Seattle Weekly's annual "Best of Seattle" readers
poll. The seven-store chain became 100% Fair Trade
in the summer of 2002, and considers this prize
a thumbs-up from its customers. |
 |
Since
the change to Fair Trade, owner Jack Kelly has
been delighted with the quality of the coffee.
"I feel we are serving the best quality ever since
switching exclusively to Fair Trade coffee. I
want everyone to know that our customers are ecstatic
about Fair Trade quality as well as being thrilled
about helping farmers earn a living wage." Kelly
says that for him, it's clear that quality and
conscience can come together in Fair Trade coffee.

TransFair Hosts First Annual
Coffee Producers Forum
16 representatives from Latin American cooperatives
producing Fair Trade Certified coffees came together
in Oakland from Nov 3-5. Co-op leaders from Mexico,
Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, Colombia
and Peru gathered to hear from coffee buyers and
discuss topics including the growth of the U.S.
Fair Trade market and the impact of proposed country
of origin and bioterrorism laws. |
|
TransFair hosted a reception introducing the producers
to Northern California coffee importers, roasters,
and retailers. For the participants, it was a first
chance to meet the people who grow their Fair Trade
Certified coffees. For those of you in other parts
of the country, we look forward to making more introductions
at the SCAA conference in Atlanta! |
